Baur au Lac

Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich’s venerable hotel, Baur au Lac, boasts a history as breathtaking as its Alp and lakeside setting. Opened in 1844 by Johannes Baur, the property hosted the world-premiere of Wagner's Die Walküre, with Richard himself performing, and Alfred Nobel’s former secretary, Bertha von Suttner, conceived of the Nobel Peace Prize in one of the hotel’s salons. Today, a cast of royals, actors and musicians are drawn to the grande-dame hotel for its stunning views, private park on the lakeshore and location to Zurich's historic sites and the Bahnhofstrasse, a fabulous shopping street. Of the four dining rooms, the al fresco Terrasse restaurant is the city’s summer hot spot, where locals and guests flock to mingle over light meals, cocktails, and spectacular views from canopy-covered tables.

Leading Spa The Dolder Grand

Zurich, Switzerland

The Dolder Grand is a city resort that beautifully merges past and future. Perched above Zurich, the fairy tale-like castle building first served as a “Curhaus” (a health spa), during the late-19th century. Today, it honors this history with a state-of-the-art, 4,000-square-meter spa, which is housed in one of the new wings designed by Lord Norman Foster. The spa comprises eighteen treatment rooms, separate areas for ladies and gentlemen, an aqua zone with views of the natural surroundings and a medical wellness center. The spa program focuses on spiritual health as well as pampering treatments. Rooms are scattered throughout the property, and all are timelessly decorated with stylish furnishings. The acclaimed "The Restaurant", headed by innovative chef Heiko Nieder, has two Michelin stars. Most striking is the hotel’s art collection with more than 100 artworks including pieces by Andy Warhol, Henry Moore and Salvador Dalí.

Widder Hotel

Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich’s Widder Hotel, built on the site of Roman and Celtic ruins, comprises nine medieval houses decorated with 15th-century frescoes. Given its historic depth, it is not surprising that architect Tilla Theus’s painstaking transformation took more than ten years. Every room is individually styled to mix the past, represented in the unusual circular rooms and passages, which refer to the Roman well uncovered during construction; and the modern, seen in furnishings created by such design greats as Charles and Ray Eames, and Frank Lloyd Wright. The Widder Bar offers over 300 single-malt whiskeys and is well-known in the jazz world, presenting stars like Diana Krall and Benny Green during the bi-annual concert series. The Widder Restaurant, overseen by Dietmar Sawyere, serves a creative international menu.
