This ornate Stone Town palace, built in 1883 for the Sultan of Zanzibar, is the tallest building in the old town and houses the Museum of Zanzibar and Swahili history.
Zanzibar’s only national park, in the central southern part of the island, is known for its population of red colobus monkeys, which are exceedingly rare.
This picturesque fishing village, with a stunning white-sand beach, sits on the northern coast of the island.
The coastal village specializes in the construction of the famous curved Zanzibari doors that adorn the homes of Stone Town and across this region.
This historic seaside village, in the remote southwest, is home of Kizimkazi Mosque, which is believed to be East Africa’s oldest Islamic building (an inscription hails from 1107 AD).
During this four-day festival in the southern village of Makunduchi, huts are burned and men stage mock fights. The holiday is in celebration of the Shirazi New Year.
The narrow streets and lanes of the old town are lined with stores, galleries and chic boutiques. Pick up handicrafts found only in Zanzibar.
These famous hand-carved chests feature ornate Arabic motifs and are made by skilled local craftsmen. They can be purchased at one of Stone Town’s many shops.
