Located on Edinburgh’s historical North Bridge, The Scotsman has been converted from the Scotsman Newspaper’s baronial offices into one of the most stylish hotels in the city. The hotel is just a minutes stroll from both Princes Street and The Royal Mile. The hotel brings together the efficiency of the 21st Century with careful design, attention to the comfort of our guests and the very best in Scottish hospitality. The primary desire was to create a hotel of comfort with an ageless design. There are novel features throughout the building, echoing back to the buildings former life as the offices of the Scotsman Newspaper, resulting in a unique experience, for all guests.
Dining In
North Bridge Brasserie & Bar is set in the original reception hall of The Scotsman newspaper. The splendid wood-panelled room with its four imposing marble pillars is set on two levels, connected by a contemporary stainless steel staircase. The bar is set in the middle of the room and its counter is the former counter used by the advertising sales team. The menu at North Bridge Brasserie is modern Scottish using local, fresh produce.
Typical dishes include Pan seared Loch Tarbert scallops, black pudding, pea puree and cider.
Rump of Perthshire Lamb, pressed confit shoulder with potato, aubergine caviar, roast garlic and tomato Organic lemon tart, vanilla custard and blueberry compote Scottish artisan cheeses and Hebridean oatcakes.
The bar is known by locals for its seasonal drinks menu - fresh berries and citrus flavours for the summer and rich, aromatic and spicy flavours for winter.
The hotel offers a 24 hour room service menu with an extensive range to select from, this is great for when you’re adapting to a new time zone and you’re in the mood for something tasty at an unusual time.
Recreation and Health
Escape – The high design health and fitness club open to hotel guests and private members. Set on the lower floors of the hotel includes a 16.2 metre stainless steel swimming pool; 60 station air-conditioned fitness studio; an aerobics studio with more than 25 classes; tropicarium; arctic & tropical showers; juice bar and café; sauna; steam room and personal trainers.
Escape is also home to the only Cowshed spa in Scotland. Five treatment rooms, a relaxation room and over 40 treatments. Cowshed products are 100% organic and made using flower and plant oils and an infusion of herbs from the walled garden at Babington House.

Flexible meetings and events space set across eight air-conditioned quiet and discreet private rooms– some named after former editors of The Scotsman newspaper and its founder. The Linklater Suite (with a private roof terrace), the Ritchie Room, Club Room, Board Room and the private screening room (much like a cinema with black leather arm chairs). Maximum capacity is up to 90 people theatre style or 250 people cocktail style.
