A Stay Fit For Royalty
Check in to Baur au Lac’s River Suite for three nights. Home to royalty, aristocracy, and heads-of-state since 1844, the venerable lakeside hotel has countless stories to be told, were it not its utmost in discretion. Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi, spent a whole summer at Baur au Lac, along with two princes, and an entourage of 60 people. Soon after Empress Sisi’s visit, Russian Tsarina, Alexandra Feodorovna, German Emperor Wilhelm II, and countless princes, counts and barons would check in. Then came the artists, invited by Zurich's young, moneyed nobility, primarily by Augusta Uebel, the wife of Swiss railway titan, Alfred Escher. German composer, Richard Wagner, gave the world premiere of the first act of Die Walküre at Baur au Lac, accompanied on the piano by his father-in-law, Franz Liszt. More recently, the likes of Placido Domingo, Sir Elton John, Joan Miró, and Fernando Botero have all called the hotel home.
Half-Day Watchmaking Workshop
The watchmaker sits behind a translucent wall separating the workshop, and puts into practice what was moments ago merely an inspired idea. Daniel Dreifuss— founder and owner Swiss watch brand, Maurice de Mariac, and patriarch of the Dreifuss family pours, over hundreds of material and manufacturing samples in search of a new detail for his watch collection at his table university. Be one of the elite group of guests invited to create your own personal watch at the Maurice de Mauriac atelier. With private assistance, watch collectors will be thrilled during this four-hour session which includes your choice of materials for the watch and strap, making your design a truly one-of-a-kind creation. Upon completion, all watches will be tested by experts, and released for pick up the following day. The cost of your watch is not included in the offer rate.
Vines & Wines
Mountains, terraces, and steep slopes are a key feature of Swiss vineyards and contribute to an air of rustic charm, in this small alpine country that has quietly been producing wine for two thousand years. Embark on a day of vineyard tours and wine tastings at the 5th generation family-owned Erich Meier Winery with a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce escort departing from Baur au Lac. Explore Erich Meier’s cellars where casks of sauvignon blanc, viognier, chardonnay, reisling, and pinot noir are stored in huge oak and steel barrels, and learn about what it takes to craft each bottle of wine. At the end of the tour, enjoy an aperitif of rare wine varietals and light snacks served to you on a perch overlooking Lake Zurich and the Alps.
Baur au Lac has provided personal and individualized service since Johannes Baur first opened the hotel in 1844.
Michelin-Starred Dining, Hand-Crafted Chocolates & Honey Bees
Gourmand’s will love the variety of culinary experiences to be had at Baur au Lac. Chocolate lovers receive Baur au Lac’s own, “1844” variety upon arrival. Personally crafted by the sixth-generation proprietor of the family-owned hotel, Mr. Andrea Kracht may well have been thinking back to the hotel’s founder, Johannes Baur, a confectioner by trade, who came to Zurich from Austria and laid the cornerstone of the Baur-Kracht hotel dynasty.
And there’s more. At your leisure, enjoy a seasonal five–course menu with corresponding wines prepared by chef Laurent Eperon, at the elegant, one Michelin-starred Pavillon restaurant. Furnished by renowned interior designer, Pierre-Yves Rochon, the sun-filled rotunda enclosed by floor to ceiling windows offers fantastic views of the surrounding park and river.
And don’t miss Baur au Lac’s on site bee hive. A short tour may be arranged to visit the queen of the bee colony; a different type of royalty than the hotel is accustomed to receiving.
Settled in the hotels manicured gardens, experience the magic of locally-made honey from Baur au Lac’s own hives and enjoy a special jar of house-made honey to take home after your stay.
