Donetsk was founded in 1869 by a Welsh businessman who came to eastern Ukraine in order to construct
a steel plant.Today it seems ironic that its origins lie with a foreigner, as its citizens are proud Ukrainians eager to introduce travelers to their rich heritage. The Donbass Palace, the city's uncontested grande dame hotel, is centrally located close to the Drama Theatre and Opera House, and has elegantly appointed guest rooms, many of which overlook the city's many parks and gardens. The concierge can help arrange day trips to nearby sites, including the Soledar salt mines and Artyomovsk, an acclaimed winery that produces sparkling wine. Guests can dine at Brasserie des Artistes, whose menu focuses on Ukrainian specialties, like borscht, blinis and caviar.
