At the highest point in Perugia, Hotel Brufani Palace occupies a proud perch-and has since 1884-overlooking the surrounding Umbrian scenery that is dotted with forts and castles. The ancient region is perfectly preserved in the nearby towns of Assisi, Todi and Orvieto, but for a true history lesson, guests need only visit the hotel's Sirenuse Club Spa: 1,000-year-old Etruscan ruins were discovered beneath the medieval vaults during a renovation and are now on display through a glass-bottom swimming pool. Back on higher ground, restaurant Collins is a culinary hotspot and serves Umbrian specialties, including local truffles. In the summer months, it opens onto the aptly named Terrazza Bellavista, which showcases the landscapes described so memorably by writer William Trevor in My House in Umbria.
