Reid’s Palace could be a film set imagined by a great cinematographer: a cliff-top hotel surrounded by subtropical gardens and located in Madeira, the Pearl of the Atlantic. The resort has a history to match its dramatic location. George Bernard Shaw mastered the tango here, calling the hotel’s dance instructor “the only man who ever taught me anything”; Robert Falcon Scott stopped by en route to the Antarctic; and Cuban dictator Fulgenico Batista took up residence on the third floor after being toppled by Fidel Castro. Today politicians, artists and royals still flock to Reid’s Palace for the privacy, views and excursions it provides, including the famous Levada walks.
