Called the city of lakes, Udaipur lies in the northwestern state of Rajasthan and is known for its wealth of elegantly preserved Rajput palaces. Today, guests can stay at one of its most famous: the Jag Nivas Lake Palace, which was built in the 17th century. When it was transformed into a hotel, its grand interiors drew the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth II and the King of Nepal. Occupying a four-acre island in Pichola Lake, the hotel appears to float on turquoise water. Cypress-shaded courtyards, gardens and fountains dot the graceful white marble complex, which was built facing the east so that residents could pray to the sun god at dawn. Most magical is to arrive by gondola at twilight, when the city lights twinkle in the background and the Aravalli Mountains are silhouetted against the evening sky.
