Hotel Okura changed the culinary landscape of the Netherlands.
There aren’t many hotels that can claim to have changed the culinary landscape of an entire country, but Hotel Okura Amsterdam can. When Executive Chef Akira Oshima arrived in the Dutch city in 1971, the Netherlands did not have a single Japanese restaurant. Within a year, Oshima trained local suppliers to deal with fresh fish from Japan, and opened the hotel’s—now Michelin starred—Yamazato restaurant. Today, the property has four restaurants (two with Michelin stars). Champagne bar, Twenty Third, offers sweeping city views from the 23rd floor. Bedrooms, meanwhile, are large and have state-of-the-art technology; the spectacular Suite is the largest and most luxurious room in the Benelux countries. Design details include silk wallpaper, a fiberoptic chandelier and LED-lit glass stairway, plus 360-degree views of the Amsterdam skyline."
